I have spent over 30 years in rooms where the stakes were high and every decision mattered.
Emergency medicine. Healthcare technology. Executive leadership at Oracle and Cerner. I have been the person in the room when it mattered and I know exactly what happens to the women who should have been there too.
But before any of that, I grew up in New York City, raised in a community of Jamaican immigrant families who arrived in this country. Most held graduate or doctoral degrees earned right here in the United States. All of them understood something early, that credentials alone would not open every door.
That you could be standing right there, in a store, where no one moved to help you, in line to board a plane and someone stepped in front of you as if you couldn't possibly belong there, in a meeting where someone recited your exact qualifications out loud while looking straight through you and still be treated as if you had not arrived.
From those moments, a particular phrase emerged. Sometimes whispered, sometimes declared, but always delivered with a blend of humor and steely resolve.

One of the most jarring moments in my life occurred 30,000 feet up when a trusted friend texted me mid-flight to say she had spotted a job listing online, my job. No one had told me. I was not in the room when that decision was made.
That moment crystallized what I had long observed in others. High-performing. Credentialed. Capable. Overlooked, not because of talent, but because of who controls access to the conversations where influence is built and opportunity is born.
